HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone released by placental cells. During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, its levels increase rapidly and double every 2 to 3 days in a healthy mother and baby. Because of this, HCG blood testing is a useful way of tracking the progress of pregnancy. It can as well help confirm pregnancy earlier compared to at-home tests, while extremely high levels may suggest a multiple pregnancy.
At Sonoclinic, we often recommend this blood test for:
- Monitoring early pregnancy to ensure it is progressing as expected.
- Checking hormone levels while pregnant.
- Assessing HCG levels as part of fertility treatment when advised to take a Beta HCG test.
Preparing for the Appointment
- Take plenty of water 24 hours prior to your test to make the blood removal smoother.
- Dress in loose-fitting clothing that provides easy access to arms and hands.
- If you take anticoagulants, it’s best to wait until after your appointment. If that’s not possible, take them beforehand only if absolutely necessary.
- If you feel nervous about needles, let the clinician know—they’ll help keep you calm and make the process as quick and comfortable as possible.
