Carotid Arteries Ultrasound Scan
A carotid artery ultrasound assesses the major neck arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain. In some cases, these critical arteries may narrow because of plaque build-up, which can increase the possibility of a stroke.
Purpose of the Carotid Artery Ultrasound
This scan is usually done to examine different areas such as:
- Common carotid artery
- External carotid artery
- Internal carotid artery
- Vertebral artery
Who Should Consider This Scan?
A carotid artery ultrasound may be recommended for individuals with:
- A family history of stroke or heart disease
- High cholesterol levels
- A recent stroke
- Diabetes
- Diagnosed coronary artery disease
What to Expect
Before starting, the sonographer will first take you through the procedure. After that, you will lie on an examination bed with your neck exposed. A small amount of gel will be applied to your skin and an ultrasound probe will be moved over the area so as to capture images of carotid arteries.
During the scan, you may hear a pulsating sound from the scanner, known as Doppler ultrasound, which is completely normal. After the examination, the sonographer will discuss the findings, and you will receive an ultrasound report to take with you. Follow-up recommendations may as well be given if necessary.
