Deep Vein Thrombosis Ultrasound Scan
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the leg. Ultrasound scans are widely used to confirm or rule out the presence of DVT. This condition frequently affects a deep leg vein, a major vein passing through the thigh and calf muscles.
DVT can result in leg pain and swelling and may cause serious complications like pulmonary embolism. This life-threatening condition also arises when a portion of the clot dislodges, travels through the bloodstream and obstructs a lung blood vessel.
A DVT ultrasound scan is the primary imaging method used to examine veins for potential clot formation.
Purpose of the DVT Ultrasound Scan
The DVT ultrasound scan is used to evaluate areas such as:
- Femoral vein
- Popliteal vein
- Saphenofemoral junction
- Deep calf veins (if visible)
Why Undergo a DVT Ultrasound Scan?
DVT ultrasound is important in examining various problems, including:
- Pain
- Swelling or tenderness occurring in one leg (typically in the calf)
- A persistent, heavy aching in the affected area
- Warmth around the clot location
- Skin redness, especially behind the knee or lower leg
Procedure Details
Before the scan, the sonographer will provide a detailed explanation of the procedure. After that, you will be asked to expose your legs, and some ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin.
The sonographer will carefully examine your leg veins by moving the ultrasound probe along their length. At times, you may feel slight pressure as the sonographer assesses the veins.
After the scan, your sonographer will discuss the results with you and any further action will be suggested as well.
