Fertility Blood Tests: Serology Package
The Fertility Blood Tests: Serology Package offered by Sonoclinic is designed to screen for specific viral infections that could impact fertility treatments. Aligned with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) guidelines, this package is recommended prior to commencing fertility procedures.
Tests included in the package are:
- HIV 1&2: Detects the presence of HIV.
- Syphilis (VDRL): Screens for existing syphilis infection by identifying specific antibodies.
- Hepatitis B (Surface Antigen): Looks for the existing hepatitis B antigen, which is a viral protein. If the result is positive, it shows that the infection is present and is transmittable.
- Hepatitis B: Looks for antibodies in the bloodstream, which are a sign of a previous hepatitis B infection. Sharing needles, having unprotected intercourse, or exposure to bodily fluids from someone infected can all spread Hepatitis B, which can lead to severe liver damage. It can also be passed on from mothers to their offspring. Immunity against hepatitis B is not ensured by the presence of this antibody.
- Hepatitis C (Antibodies): A blood test for hepatitis C antibodies can indicate if you’ve had a past infection, but it won’t confirm whether the virus is still present. If antibodies are detected, a follow-up test is needed to check for an active infection. Hepatitis C may cause severe liver damage and spreads through unprotected intercourse, needle sharing, or transmission from mother to child.
- Rubella (Antibodies): A rubella test is a straightforward blood test that checks if you have developed antibodies from a past infection or vaccination, ensuring protection for you and a baby. A positive result confirms the presence of antibodies, meaning vaccination isn’t needed. If no antibodies are found, the MMR vaccine is required before fertility treatment.
- Chlamydia (Urine Test): This detects chlamydia, which must be treated before beginning fertility treatment. It requires a urine sample, which you’ll need to provide during your appointment.
HFEA guidelines recommend conducting these tests within three months before starting fertility treatment and repeating them every two years thereafter. Identifying and addressing infections promptly ensures appropriate planning and management during the fertility journey.
Preparing For the Test
At Sonoclinic, our skilled phlebotomy professionals will collect a blood sample during your appointment. To ensure a smooth and comfortable experience, please follow these guidelines:
- Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of fluids 24 hours before your appointment to make blood withdrawal easier.
- Wear loose clothing – This will allow easy access to your arms and hands.
- If you take anticoagulant medications, try to take them after the blood test. If this is not possible, take them before or consult your provider.
- Inform your healthcare provider if you have a fear of needles – They will take steps to make the process as comfortable as possible.
