Pelvic Fertility - Baseline Scan
The pelvic fertility baseline scan is a gynaecological ultrasound designed for individuals assessing their pelvic health for fertility purposes or undergoing treatment. It serves as an initial evaluation of the uterus, endometrium (womb lining), and ovaries and includes an Antral Follicle Count (AFC) to assess ovarian reserve.
Who Is It For?
This scan is recommended for individuals considering their fertility options or receiving treatment. It provides essential baseline details and a thorough evaluation of your pelvic anatomy, meeting the requirements of your fertility clinic. It is also available for those aged 16 and above and is conducted by an experienced sonographer with diagnostic expertise.
What’s Included?
- 30-minute appointment
- Comprehensive assessment of the uterus, endometrium, ovaries, and pelvic region
- Medical follow-up recommendations, if necessary
- Detailed written report with scan findings and next steps
Best Time for Your Scan
For optimal accuracy, the pelvic fertility baseline scan is best performed between days 2 and 5 of your menstrual cycle.
Scan Procedure
For the most precise results, a pelvic fertility baseline scan is typically performed trans-vaginally, where the sonographer will insert an ultrasound probe into your vagina with your consent.
If you prefer not to have a transvaginal scan, a trans-abdominal option (placing the probe on your pelvic area) may be available, though it may provide less detailed images.
How to Prepare for Your Scan
- Drink 500ml (1 pint) of clear fluid approximately one hour before your appointment.
- If you consent to a transvaginal scan, empty your bladder before your scan.
- If you prefer a trans-abdominal scan only, do not empty your bladder beforehand.
- As access to your abdomen is required, ensure that you wear a two-piece outfit (like trousers or a skirt with a top).
