Abdominal Aorta Scan
An Abdominal Aorta Scan is an ultrasound examination we perform at Sonoclinic to assess the shape, size and condition of the aorta and iliac arteries. If an aneurysm is detected, the kidneys and renal arteries will be examined as well. Additionally, we use the scan to check for aortic constriction caused by plaque, calcification, or thrombus (blood clot) accumulation.
Reasons for Undergoing the Scan
This ultrasound screening is commonly performed to:
- Detect an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
- Monitor aortic enlargement
- Assess a family history of aortic aneurysm
What Does an Abdominal Aortic Scan Include?
This scan is available for individuals aged 45 and over and is conducted by an experienced sonographer specialising in diagnostic imaging.
The scan entails:
- A 15-minute diagnostic session
- A comprehensive ultrasound report
- Medical follow-up recommendations, if needed
You will also be provided with a detailed written report of your results, along with guidance on any necessary next steps.
Preparing for Your Scan
If you are already receiving care from a healthcare provider, please consult them before booking. Also, to ensure optimal results, follow these abdominal aorta scan preparation steps:
- Refrain from eating for eight hours before your scan. You can take only clear liquids without milk or sugar.
- For diabetic patients, you may continue eating but should keep off fatty and dairy foods.
- Take your usual medications as prescribed.
- Dress in a two-piece outfit (e.g., a top with trousers or a skirt) for easy access to your abdomen.
Keep in mind that we cannot perform the scan for a specific condition, especially if you are already on a treatment plan. However, if you are not receiving treatment but want to monitor a known condition, you can discuss it with our healthcare providers.
