Carotid Scan
The Carotid Scan aims to assess the size, state, and blood circulation in the neck's arteries. This includes:
- Common carotid arteries running from their starting point to where they divide to supply different parts of the brain and head.
- Inner and outer carotid arteries.
- Vertebral arteries.
At Sonoclinic, we perform this ultrasound screening mainly to detect plaque accumulation and any resulting constricting of the carotid arteries. As these arteries become narrower, the likelihood of experiencing a stroke rises with age.
Who Should Consider a Carotid Scan?
This scan is available for individuals aged 45 and older. If you are already receiving care from your primary caregiver, ensure to consult them before booking this scan.
In addition, to be eligible for this scan, you should not have any medical conditions, ongoing treatments, or scheduled procedures. If you have any concerns about undergoing a scan, discuss them with your provider.
What to Expect
The carotid scan is done by experienced sonographers who are specialised in diagnostic imaging. It includes:
- A 30-minute diagnostic session
- A comprehensive ultrasound report
- Medical follow-up recommendations, if needed
We will provide you with a complete written report of your results, along with recommended next steps, if any. If a medical follow-up is required, you will be provided with physical copies of the images and the diagnostic report during the time of your appointment.
How to Prepare for Your Scan
Since we will require access to your neck, ensure that you wear clothes with a loose neckline for convenience.
