Kidneys, Bladder and Prostate Scan with PSA Blood Test
The kidneys, bladder, and prostate scan with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is a comprehensive diagnostic service designed to assess the health of the urinary system and prostate gland. Sonoclinic uses this scan to examine the shape, size, and condition of:
- The bladder, both when full and just after emptying
- Both kidneys and the ureters (tubes carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder)
- The prostate gland, if visible
On the other hand, the PSA blood test measures PSA levels in the bloodstream. PSA is the protein released by normal prostate cells. Elevated levels may indicate issues like an enlarged prostate, a urinary tract infection, prostatitis, or prostate cancer.
Purpose of Kidneys, Bladder and Prostate Scan with PSA Blood Test
The kidney, bladder, and prostate scan with PSA blood test is available for individuals above 45 who were assigned male at birth. It is conducted by experienced sonographers and can help in:
- Assessing potential effects of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Detecting blockages caused by kidney or bladder stones
- Identifying possible reasons for ongoing bladder issues
- Checking for prostate enlargement
The PSA blood test also measures PSA levels in the blood, which may indicate abnormalities in the prostate.
What to Expect
The prostate ultrasound plus the blood test is available for individuals aged above 45 who were assigned male at birth. The appointment usually lasts 25 minutes.
Following your appointment, you will receive a detailed written report with recommendations, along with physical copies of images and a diagnostic report. Blood test results will be available after 3 to 4 working days.
Do not schedule this scan if you have an ongoing medical condition or are waiting for treatment related to the scanned areas. Also, we cannot do the scan if you have a urinary infection or underwent a prostate biopsy within the last six weeks.
Also, keep in mind that we do not perform a scan for a specific disorder if you are already on a treatment plan. Nevertheless, you can schedule the scan if you have a known condition and are not receiving treatment but wish to have it monitored.
Preparing for Your Scan
- Consume 500ml (or 1 pint) of clear liquid about an hour before your scan, and avoid emptying your bladder.
- Put on a two-piece outfit (trousers with a top or a skirt with a top) to allow easy access to your abdomen.
To ensure accurate results, ensure that you avoid the following:
- Ejaculating for 48 hours before your appointment.
- Intense exercise for 48 hours before the scan.
- Anal sex or prostate stimulation for at least 7 days before undergoing a blood test.
