Post Menopause Pelvic Scan

Post Menopause Pelvic Scan

Our post menopause pelvic scan at Sonoclinic is designed to assess the health of the uterus, ovaries, endometrial lining, and the left and right pelvic regions (adnexa). In addition to the scan, we perform a blood test to measure the CA125 marker using a single vial of blood.

This scan is available to individuals who have not had a menstrual period for at least one year. Based on initial results, we may also examine your bladder and kidneys. If necessary, our sonographers will provide a detailed explanation to help you understand.

Reasons for a Post-Menopause Pelvic Scan

A pelvic scan may be recommended for the following reasons:

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Family history of ovarian cancer
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Monitoring hormone replacement therapy (HRT) effects
  • Identifying fibroids
  • Detecting endometrial polyps

If you experience any of these symptoms, we strongly advise discussing them with your GP as soon as possible.

CA125 Blood Test and Ovarian Cancer Screening

As part of this assessment, a blood test will be conducted to check the CA125 marker. Elevated levels may indicate an increased risk of ovarian cancer, making this screening method a valuable tool for early detection.

Ovarian cancer is mostly referred to as a "silent killer" as it may not show symptoms and accounts for 5% of cancer-related deaths among women. The scan and blood test thus can help evaluate your risk.

What the Scan Includes

Our comprehensive post menopause pelvic scan package consists of the following:

  • A 30-minute diagnostic session
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • CA125 blood test
  • Blood test results within seven working days
  • Comprehensive diagnostic report

For the most accurate results, an internal (transvaginal) ultrasound may be required. If so, the sonographer will explain the procedure and obtain your consent before inserting the ultrasound probe into the vagina.

Preparing for Your Scan

To ensure the best possible results, please follow these guidelines:

  • Take one litre of clear fluid approximately an hour before your scan. A full bladder ensures the clearest possible view of the uterus.
  • Put on a two-piece outfit (such as a top with trousers or a skirt) to allow easy access to your pelvic region.

If you are currently under medical care, it is important to consult your provider before booking this scan.

After the Scan

You will receive an in-depth written report with recommendations for any necessary next steps. If a follow-up is required, we can send a copy of your results to your healthcare provider. You will also be given physical copies of your scan images and diagnostic findings during your appointment.
