Upper Abdominal and Pelvic Scan

Upper Abdominal and Pelvic Scan

Sonoclinic provides upper abdominal and pelvic scans designed to assess the size, shape, and state of the biliary system, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, and kidneys. For individuals assigned male at birth, we use this scan to evaluate the shape, size, and condition of the bladder and prostate region. For those assigned female at birth, this scan examines the size, shape, and condition of the central blood vessels, spleen, uterus, ovaries, womb lining, and pelvic area.

Purpose of the Scan

Upper abdominal and pelvic scan can assist in identifying or ruling out conditions such as:

  • Gallstones or polyps
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Polycystic ovaries
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Additionally, it evaluates:

  • Liver and kidney structure
  • Bladder function

If you are currently under a healthcare provider’s care, do not undergo this scan before discussing it with your provider.

What’s Included in the Scan

Upper abdominal and pelvic scan involves a 30-minute session for men and a 40-minute session for women. This scan is available for individuals aged 16 and over and is conducted by experienced sonographers.

You will receive a detailed written report of your results, along with recommendations for any necessary follow-up. We will also give you printed images and a diagnostic report during your appointment.

For individuals assigned female at birth, we may request consent to carry out an internal (transvaginal) scan. This involves inserting an ultrasound probe into the vagina to obtain clearer images.

Preparing for Your Scan

  • Take one litre of clear liquid approximately one hour before your appointment.
  • Avoid urinating before your scan.
  • Wear two-piece clothes (such as a top with trousers or a skirt) to allow easy access to your abdomen.
  • Fast for at least 8 hours before your appointment. If you have diabetes, you may eat but should avoid dairy products and fatty foods.
  • Continue taking your usual medication.

Note that we do not scan for a specific condition if you have an ongoing treatment plan and are under care. But, if you have a known health problem and are not currently receiving treatment, you can book a scan for monitoring purposes.
