Abdominal Aortic Scan

Abdominal Aortic Scan

An aortic scan, also known as aortic aneurysm screening or AAA scan, is a fast, painless ultrasound test that examines the abdominal aorta. Usually, we use it to look for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by measuring its size.

Purpose of an Aortic Scan

An aortic scan checks for signs of an AAA—a swelling in the abdominal section of the aorta, the body's main artery. While AAAs often cause no symptoms, the artery wall weakens as it expands. If it ruptures, it can be life-threatening.

Small aneurysms are not immediately dangerous but may grow over time, hence making regular monitoring essential.

Why You May Need an Aortic Scan

This scan is mainly recommended for:

  • AAA detection.
  • Aortic dilation monitoring.
  • Assessing family history of AAA.

The abdominal aortic scan is most commonly suitable for individuals 45 years and older. Additionally, women at the age of 65 or above with a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm, hypertension, smoking history, or peripheral artery aneurysms should consider screening.

What to Expect

You will be required to uncover the region being scanned. So we recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing.

A small amount of ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin. An ultrasound probe will be moved over the area, generating real-time images on the monitor. A clinical specialist will analyse the images.

The abdominal aortic scan is quick, painless, and lasts 10-15 minutes. You will receive a detailed report of the results at the end of the scan.
