Lumps and Bumps Ultrasound Scan

The lumps and bumps scan is used to assess any lump that can be felt or seen in the body. This ultrasound is typically the first-line imaging method for evaluating bumps or general swelling. The leading causes of lumps include lipomas, ganglion cysts, and sebaceous cysts, which are usually easy to identify with ultrasound.

Other conditions that may be detected during the scan include masses, cysts, and haematomas.

Why Have a Lumps and Bumps Scan?

The lumps and bumps can occur in many areas of the body, such as the breast, neck/thyroid, hands/wrists, feet/ankle, or knee. Most people seek ultrasound scans for various reasons, including:

• Swelling in a specific area
• Pain due to a lump
• Swelling caused by trauma

What to Expect

Before your scan, your sonographer will explain the procedure. After that, you will lie back on the examination bed while the affected area is exposed. A small amount of gel will be applied to your skin, and an ultrasound probe will be moved around to capture internal images.

During and after the scan, the sonographer will discuss the findings, and you will receive a detailed ultrasound report to take with you.
