Soft Tissue Scan
A soft tissue scan is a non-invasive ultrasound test used to evaluate the soft tissue near the lumps, bumps, and swellings around the body. It helps determine if a lump is fluid-filled (cystic) or solid and can also assist in diagnosing infections such as abscesses, cellulitis, and necrotising fasciitis. Additionally, the scan is helpful in detecting foreign bodies and assessing lymph nodes.
In general, soft tissue scan can reveal:
- The size of the lump
- Consistency (fluid-filled or solid)
- Location within the body
- Appearance
What Can the Scan Detect?
The soft tissue ultrasound scan provides a detailed assessment of various body areas, focusing on the skin layers and underlying muscles. It is also ideal for persons at the age of 16 and can assist in diagnosing:
- Cysts such as lipomas and ganglion cysts
- Foreign bodies embedded in soft tissue
- Skin changes
- Soft tissue swelling and lumps
- Hernias
- Unexplained swelling
What to Expect
A small amount of ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin to enhance imaging quality. The ultrasound probe will be gently moved over the area to generate images on the ultrasound monitor that will translated by your clinician.
The scan typically lasts 10-15 minutes and is completely pain-free. After the scan, you will receive an in-depth report of your results and suggestions for the next action.
