Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan
Sonoclinic offers thyroid and neck ultrasound scan to diagnose suspected thyroid conditions, such as a bump in the thyroid or improper thyroid function. Goitre, a swelling of the thyroid gland caused by multiple nodules, is a common reason people schedule an ultrasound appointment.
Since neck structures are close to the surface, lumps are more noticeable. Usually, these are normal, sensitive lymph nodes, which a neck ultrasound can confirm. Salivary glands may also lead to discomfort or swelling because of the small stones blocking the salivary ducts.
Purpose of the Scan
Mainly, we use thyroid and neck scans to:
- Assess the thyroid gland
- Examine the salivary glands
- Evaluate surrounding structures in the neck
Why You May Require a Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound
- History of thyroid conditions
- Monitoring a known thyroid nodule
- Identifying the nature and source of a neck lump
- Swollen salivary glands
- Checking for lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes)
- Suspected thyroid disease
- Unusual swellings
- Difficulty swallowing
- Inflammation
- Cysts
- Tumours
What to Expect
Before undergoing the scan, the sonographer will first explain the procedure to you. You must take off any jewellery and expose your neck for this scan.
A small amount of ultrasound gel will be applied, and the transducer will be moved over your neck to capture images. The sonographer will discuss the findings during or after the scan, and you will receive a report to take with you or share with your doctor.
