Hand Ultrasound Scan
The hand bones provide stability and flexibility to allow for a wide range of movements. Each hand consists of 27 individual bones, which enables precise motion and dexterity. The ulna and radius in the forearm support the muscles that control the movement of the hand.
Despite the complexity of hand anatomy and the variety of conditions that can arise, many issues are localised, and clinical concerns are often specific. This makes ultrasound an excellent imaging tool for diagnosing hand problems.
Injuries to the hand are common among athletes and may affect ligaments, joint surfaces, muscles, tendons, and nerves. These injuries can be either acute or chronic.
Purpose of the Hand Ultrasound Scan
The hand ultrasound scan is mainly performed to assess the structures of the hand including:
- Finger flexor tendons
- Tendon sheath
- Pulleys
- Palmar fascia
- Ulnar collateral ligament

What to Expect
Before the scan, the sonographer will discuss the procedure with you.
During the scan, you will remain seated with your arm resting on a pillow. A small amount of ultrasound gel will be applied to your hand, and a probe will be moved across in various directions. You may need to move your hand in order to help assess the affected region when in motion.
Throughout and after the examination, the sonographer will discuss the findings with you. You will also receive a detailed ultrasound report along with follow-up recommendations if needed.
