Growth Scan

Growth Scan (24-36 Weeks)

A growth scan is a prenatal ultrasound examination performed between 24 and 36 weeks of gestation. At Sonoclinic, we utilise this scan to monitor the development of the baby. This helps us ensure it aligns with the expected growth patterns for the given stage of pregnancy.

Why Should You Have a Growth Scan?

  • Foetal measurements: The scan assesses the baby’s head, abdomen, and thighbone measurements to estimate foetal weight.
  • Amniotic fluid assessment: Evaluating the quantity of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is crucial.
  • Placental and umbilical cord evaluation: The scan examines blood flow from the umbilical cord to the placenta to assess placental function and detect potential issues.

When is a Growth Scan Recommended?

Growth scans are usually recommended if there are issues about the following:

  • The size of the baby.
  • A history of complications in previous pregnancies.
  • Maternal medical conditions such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia. These conditions may necessitate multiple growth scans so as to monitor the baby’s health and development.

What to Expect During the Scan

The growth scan is a 15-minute diagnostic procedure conducted by a qualified sonographer. It includes:

  • A detailed report with foetal weight estimation.
  • Umbilical artery blood flow assessment. This looks for foetal growth limit during the third trimester by evaluating blood flow in the umbilical artery.
  • Complimentary determination of the baby’s sex upon request.
  • Physical copies of ultrasound images.

If the baby’s position makes it challenging to obtain clear images during the scan, a complimentary rescan or alternative is offered. Additionally, there’s an option to view the baby in 4D with the 4D Freeview feature, including thermal black and white 3D prints. However, if the baby’s position doesn’t allow for a good view on the day, a rescan isn’t required since this isn’t the main aim of the scan.

How to Prepare for Scan

We recommend wearing two-piece clothing to allow easy access to the abdomen. In order to ensure thorough prenatal care, it is also advisable to bring any growth scan reports.
