Follicle Tracking Scan

Follicle Tracking Scan

Follicle tracking involves observing the size and number of ovarian follicles throughout your cycle using a transvaginal ultrasound scan. At Sonoclinic, we use this procedure to assess follicle development, support fertility monitoring and identify the optimal time for conception. In addition, this technique is helpful during IVF treatment to track follicle growth and determine the best timing for egg retrieval.

Reasons for a Follicular Tracking Scan

  • IVF treatment – Your fertility specialist needs to track follicle count, size, and endometrial thickness.
  • Regular cycles, difficulty conceiving – You have been trying for several months without success and need ovulation monitoring.
  • Irregular cycles – You want assistance in identifying the best time for conception.
  • Planning for pregnancy – You wish to confirm if you are ovulating.

How is the Scan Performed?

A follicular tracking scan is a type of transvaginal ultrasound. It entails inserting a thin ultrasound probe into the vagina. This helps provide a clearer view of the uterus, uterine lining, and ovaries. The procedure is similar to a pelvic ultrasound.

During the scan, you will lie on your back on an examination bed, and you will be given a towel to cover yourself. A lubricated probe will be gently inserted into the vagina and shifted in various directions to capture the best images. While this scan may cause slight discomfort, it should be painless.

How to Prepare for the Scan

Internal (transvaginal) scans – These may be recommended or required for certain procedures as they provide clearer and more detailed images. There is no need for a full bladder; you may have to empty it before the scan. Also, it is advisable to wear a comfortable outfit that enables easy access to the pelvic region.

Abdominal (transabdominal) scans – If your scan is performed over the abdomen, a comfortably full bladder is needed. Consume 0.5 litres of clear fluid about 30 minutes before your appointment, and avoid emptying your bladder.
