Liver Scan

Liver Scan

A liver scan is a safe, non-invasive test designed to assess the size, shape, and echogenicity (structure) of the liver. This scan uses sound waves to generate real-time images of the liver and nearby organs. Hence, it makes it easy to evaluate their condition and detect potential abnormalities like tissue changes or growths.

At Sonoclinic, we also use the liver scan to examine the gallbladder, pancreas, bile duct and spleen for a more thorough health check.

What Can a Liver Scan Detect?

In general, a liver ultrasound can assist in identifying:

  • Liver size, shape, and structural changes
  • Signs of liver disease, including fatty liver or cirrhosis
  • Gallstones or gallbladder disease
  • Enlarged bile ducts
  • Cysts, tumours, or abnormal growths
  • Fluid build-up (ascites)
  • Altered liver function
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating

What to Expect

During the procedure, you will need to expose the area being examined. Hence, it is advisable to put on loose-fitting clothing for better comfort.

An ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin to enhance image clarity. After that, a handheld ultrasound probe will be placed on your skin and moved across the area. This process generates images displayed on the ultrasound monitor.

The liver scan is completely painless and normally lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Once completed, you will receive a comprehensive report of the findings and have the chance to discuss them further.

Preparation Requirements

  • You must fast for at least six hours before your scan, though you may drink clear fluids like water.
  • If you have diabetes, continue your regular meals, but do not consume fatty or dairy products for at least six hours before the scan.
  • You may take your usual medications as prescribed.
