Menopause Blood Test
A menopause blood test measures various hormone levels to determine whether a woman is in the menopausal stage. This includes taking a blood sample from your arm, which is then analysed for key hormonal markers.
The test examines the following biomarkers:
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Luteinising hormone (LH)
- Oestradiol
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone
- Free T4
Why Is a Menopause Blood Test Important?
A menopause blood test determines whether your symptoms are due to menopause or another health disorder. Common menopause-related symptoms are:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Hot flashes
- Sleep disturbances
- Mood changes
- Vaginal irritation, dryness, or discharge
- Difficulty concentrating
Additionally, if you are undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT), this test can monitor hormone levels and thyroid function. It may also help identify other potential reasons for similar symptoms.
Procedure Details
During the test, your clinician will ask you to uncover one of your arms to locate a vein. They will then wrap and tighten a strap around the upper part of the arm in order to make the vein more visible.
A needle is inserted into your vein, and a small amount of blood is collected into a tube. Then, a small plaster will be placed over it to close the site, and you may remove it after a few minutes.
How to Prepare: Since the test requires access to your arm, it is recommended to wear loose clothing for convenience.
