Private Breast Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound is the primary method for assessing lumps in women. Breast lumps are quite common, and this scan offers a quick and simple way to examine them, easing the anxiety of uncertainty.

This imaging technique is ideal for early detection. It helps determine whether a lump is solid—potentially a benign growth or malignant tumour—or a fluid-filled sac like a harmless cyst.

The procedure relies on sound waves to create images of the breast’s internal structures. At Sonoclinic, we mainly use breast ultrasound to evaluate lumps or other irregularities identified during a physical examination, mammogram, or MRI. Generally, these ultrasound scans are safe, non-invasive, and free from ionising radiation.

Why Might You Require a Breast Ultrasound?

A breast ultrasound may be recommended for various reasons:

  • Detecting the cause of symptoms, including lumps, skin texture changes, lumpiness, or nipple discharge
  • Evaluating abnormalities found in a mammogram or MRI
  • Monitoring previously diagnosed benign lumps
  • Investigating breast pain
  • Determining whether a lump is a cyst or solid mass
  • Assessing breast implants and adjacent tissue
  • Routine preventive screenings
  • Examining breast symptoms while breastfeeding
  • Checking for concerns in individuals with a history of breast cancer
  • General breast health assessment

Breast ultrasound can also be used as a screening tool for women who:

  • Are at high risk for breast cancer but cannot undergo an MRI.
  • Are expectant or should avoid X-ray exposure, which is required for mammograms.
  • Have dense breast tissue (a higher proportion of glandular and connective tissue with less fatty tissue).

What to Expect

Before the procedure, our consultant sonographer will take you through the process. The scan will be done while lying on an examination table with your breast exposed and sometimes your arm raised over your head. Ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin, and a handheld probe will be used to capture pictures of the breast tissue.

The sonographer will discuss initial findings during the exam, and give a detailed report afterward.

In case an abnormality like a tumour is detected, the sonographer will offer guidance on the next steps. Further examinations, such as fine needle aspiration (FNA) or a biopsy, may be recommended to determine whether the mass is non-cancerous or malignant.
