Frequently Asked Questions

A calf ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create live images of the muscles and soft tissue in your lower leg. It’s completely safe, painless, and highly accurate for diagnosing injuries, swelling, or masses.

This scan helps identify causes of:

  • Calf pain or tightness
  • Swelling after injury or exercise
  • Lumps or bumps under the skin
  • Bruising or fluid build-up
  • Limited mobility or stiffness
  • Post-surgery discomfort or scarring

  • Muscle tears or strains (gastrocnemius, soleus)
  • Tendon injuries
  • Calf muscle herniation
  • Soft tissue cysts or lipomas
  • Inflammation or infection
  • Post-trauma swelling or fibrosis
  • Venous congestion or vascular changes

No special preparation is required.

Simply:

  • Wear loose clothing that allows access to your lower leg.
  • Avoid applying creams or oils before your appointment.

You’ll be comfortably seated or lying down. A small amount of clear gel is applied to your calf, and the ultrasound probe is gently moved across the skin to capture images. The process is painless, takes 15–30 minutes, and your specialist will discuss your results during the appointment.

No. Ultrasound is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and is entirely safe. You may feel light pressure from the probe but no discomfort.

If your scan reveals an issue, your specialist will clearly explain the findings and may recommend:

  • Physiotherapy or rehabilitation
  • Referral to a vascular or orthopaedic specialist
  • Further imaging (MRI or DVT ultrasound)
  • Follow-up scans to monitor healing
