Frequently Asked Questions

A pelvic ultrasound uses harmless sound waves (not radiation) to create images of the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures. It’s completely safe and pain-free.

This scan can investigate symptoms such as:

  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
  • Heavy or irregular bleeding
  • Period irregularities or post-menopausal bleeding
  • Fertility concerns
  • Cysts, fibroids, or pelvic masses
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Abnormal cervical or hormone test results

  • Transabdominal Ultrasound – Performed externally across the lower abdomen for a general overview.
  • Transvaginal Ultrasound – Offers a closer, more detailed look at the uterus and ovaries.

Your specialist will recommend the most suitable option based on your symptoms.

  • Drink 2 pints of water one hour before your appointment to fill your bladder.
  • Avoid eating for 4–6 hours before your scan to enhance image quality.
  • You may be asked to empty your bladder before a transvaginal scan.

You’ll lie comfortably while a gel is applied to your skin (for transabdominal) or a thin, lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina (for transvaginal).
The procedure takes 15–30 minutes and is entirely safe.
