Frequently Asked Questions

A hip ultrasound is a safe, painless, and radiation-free diagnostic scan that uses sound waves to produce real-time images of the hip joint and surrounding structures.
It helps identify causes of pain, stiffness, or movement restriction due to injury, arthritis, or inflammation.

This scan helps investigate:

  • Hip or groin pain
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Clicking or grinding sensations
  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Post-injury pain
  • Lumps or bumps near the hip area
  • Pain radiating into the thigh or buttocks

Ultrasound imaging accurately detects inflammation, tears, or degeneration in the muscles, tendons, and joint capsule.

  • Osteoarthritis or joint degeneration
  • Bursitis or fluid build-up
  • Tendon tears or tendinopathy
  • Muscle inflammation or strain
  • Cartilage damage or impingement
  • Labral tears
  • Cysts, lumps, or soft tissue masses
  • Post-surgical complications or trauma

Common causes include:

  • Arthritis or joint wear
  • Overuse or repetitive strain
  • Muscle or tendon injuries
  • Poor posture or gait
  • Trauma or sports injury
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Hip impingement or dysplasia

Your ultrasound helps pinpoint the cause and guide treatment such as physiotherapy or orthopaedic referral.

No special preparation is required.
Simply:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid applying creams or lotions near your hips.
  • You may be asked to change into a gown for better access to the area.

You’ll lie comfortably on an examination couch.
A small amount of gel is applied to your hip, and a handheld probe is gently moved across the area to capture live images.
The scan takes 15–30 minutes, and your sonographer will explain the findings during your appointment.

No. The procedure is entirely painless, non-invasive, and uses no radiation.
You may feel slight pressure as the probe moves across the hip, but it’s generally very comfortable.

You should book a scan if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening hip pain
  • Swelling, lump, or redness
  • Limited movement or stiffness
  • Pain that radiates to your thigh, groin, or lower back
  • Difficult walking or sleeping due to pain

Early imaging ensures accurate diagnosis and faster recovery.

If your scan reveals abnormalities, your specialist will:

  • Explain the findings clearly
  • Provide recommendations or next steps
  • Offer referrals to physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons, or rheumatologists if required

Your care pathway remains fully under your control.
