Frequently Asked Questions

An ovarian ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of your ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs. It’s completely safe, painless, and radiation-free, suitable for women of all ages.

You may need an ovarian ultrasound to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
  • Bloating or swelling
  • Irregular or heavy bleeding
  • Fertility issues
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Family history of ovarian or reproductive cancers

Screening also helps monitor known conditions like ovarian cysts, PCOS, or endometriosis.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside the ovaries.
Most are benign (non-cancerous) and resolve naturally, but some can cause pain, irregular periods, or fertility issues.
A specialist ultrasound helps identify whether a cyst is simple, complex, or concerning, guiding further management if necessary.

Ultrasound can detect suspicious cysts or masses that may need further investigation.
While not a definitive cancer test, it is one of the most effective first-line tools for detecting early signs of ovarian disease or malignancy.

There are two types of ovarian ultrasound:

  • Transabdominal Scan – performed over the lower abdomen with a full bladder to improve visibility.
  • Transvaginal Scan (TVS) – a small, lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina to provide a more detailed image of the ovaries.

Both are safe, comfortable, and typically take 15–30 minutes.

For a transabdominal scan:

  • Drink 2 pints of water an hour before your appointment to keep your bladder full.
  • Avoid eating for 4–6 hours for clearer imaging.

For a transvaginal scan, you’ll be asked to empty your bladder before the scan.

The procedure is painless. You may feel mild pressure during the transvaginal scan, but it should not be uncomfortable.
Our specialists ensure your privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout.

Your results will be explained immediately after the scan, with a comprehensive report emailed securely later that day.

No — ultrasound is completely safe and non-invasive.
It uses sound waves (not radiation), so it carries no known side effects or risks.

No downtime is required. You can return to normal activities and diet immediately after your appointment.
