HBcAb blood test detects the presence of IGM antibodies in your bloodstream, signalling an active hepatitis B infection. These antibodies are the body’s initial response to an infection. Hepatitis B, a virus that can severely harm the liver, spreads through unprotected intercourse, needle sharing, or any exposure to an infected person’s bodily fluids. Additionally, mothers can transmit it to their newborns. Detecting this antibody, however, does not ensure immunity against hepatitis B.

- Hydrate by drinking plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to your appointment. This will make the removal of blood easier.
- Dress in loose clothing to ensure that the blood draw area can easily be accessed.
- If you are on anticoagulant medication, take it after the appointment. If this is not possible, you can take it before your appointment.
- Let your GP know if you are anxious about needles. They will make sure you’re calm and comfortable and do everything they can to make your blood draw quick and simple.
