Abdomen and Pelvis Ultrasound Scan

Abdomen and Pelvis Ultrasound Scan

Abdominal ultrasound scans are frequently performed due to the numerous organs in the abdomen area. This imaging technique primarily examines the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys and spleen in the upper abdomen. Discomfort in the upper abdomen or right upper quadrant may be linked to these organs or, occasionally, the stomach.

Gynaecological issues like heavy bleeding, painful menstruation, discomfort during intercourse, and general pelvic pain are widespread across all age groups. Pelvic ultrasound scans are commonly used to detect potential causes, including fibroids, uterine polyps, and ovarian cysts. There are two types of pelvic ultrasounds: transabdominal (suprapubic), performed through the bladder, and transvaginal, conducted via the vagina.

Both ultrasound methods help visualise the uterus and ovaries for abnormalities, providing valuable information that can be combined for optimal diagnosis. In some cases, transabdominal imaging is so clear that a more invasive approach is unnecessary. At Sonoclinic, we use both techniques as complementary tools.

Purpose of the Abdomen and Pelvis Scan

This scan is mainly performed to assess various organs, including:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Bladder
  • Kidneys
  • Uterus (womb)
  • Ovaries
  • Endometrium (uterine lining)
  • Nearby pelvic structures

Reasons for an Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound

This ultrasound is important for:

  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Monitoring previous findings (e.g., cysts, polyps, gallstones, kidney stones)
  • Irregular blood test results
  • Vomiting
  • Discomfort
  • Kidney pain
  • Blood in urine
  • Bladder problems
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Cystitis
  • Detection of tumours and cancers
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Identifying fibroids

Preparation for the Scan

  • Don’t consume anything for 4 hours before your appointment. If you have diabetes, you may take a sugary supplement if necessary.
  • Ensure your bladder is full by drinking 2 pints of water an hour before the scan.

What to Expect

Before the scan, our sonographer will take you through the process. You will then lie flat on the examination couch, with the necessary area of your abdomen exposed.

A small amount of ultrasonic gel is applied to your skin, and an ultrasound probe will be moved over the area to capture images of the organs.

Throughout and after the procedure, our sonographer will discuss the findings, and you will receive a detailed ultrasound report to take with you.

In some cases, a transvaginal scan may be required for a more detailed assessment of pelvic organs.
