Dating Scan (9-16 weeks)
A dating scan is an essential early ultrasound examination. At Sonoclinic, we perform a dating scan between 9 and 15 weeks + 6 days of pregnancy. This scan serves multiple purposes, such as:
- Confirming gestational age: With foetal measurement, we can accurately determine the gestational age, which helps to establish an estimated due date.
- Viability assessment: The scan detects whether there is a foetal heartbeat, hence reassuring the progress of the pregnancy.
- Determining pregnancy type: It identifies if the pregnancy is single or multiple (twins or triplets).
What to Expect During the Scan
During the procedure, a qualified sonographer conducts a 15-minute diagnostic appointment. This session includes the ultrasound examination, a review of the images, and an opportunity for you to ask any questions. You'll receive printed pictures and a detailed diagnostic report summarizing the findings. The sonographer will provide appropriate advice and guidance if any unexpected issues are detected.
A dating scan is most appropriate for people aged 16 and above. You can also bring guests along with you on your visit, except children.
How to Prepare for the Scan
To ensure the best possible images and a smooth process, do the following:
- Ensure that your bladder is full before the scan, as this can improve the baby's visibility.
- Wear a two-piece clothing such as a skirt or trousers with a top for easy access to your abdomen.
