Early Viability Scan

Early Viability Scan (6-9 weeks)

An early viability scan, usually conducted between 6 weeks and 8 weeks + 6 days of pregnancy, is designed to confirm the early pregnancy viability. The embryo is very small and undergoing significant development during this period. We offer this scan at Sonoclinic mostly for reassurance by identifying noticeable pulsations, which confirm the heartbeat of the baby. This helps ensure that the pregnancy is on the right course.

Benefits of an Early Viability Scan

Opting for an early pregnancy scan provides several advantages for expectant mothers:

  • Early detection of complications: This scan enables us to identify potential concerns, such as abnormalities or complications, at an early stage. Early detection allows for timely medical intervention, hence ensuring the mother’s and baby’s well-being.
  • Reassurance and peace of mind: Seeing the developing foetus and hearing the heartbeat can offer emotional reassurance to parents, confirming a healthy pregnancy.
  • Bonding experience: Early scans allow parents to connect with their unborn child by viewing their tiny features and motions on the screen.
  • Accurate pregnancy dating: Determining a precise due date is essential for prenatal care planning, and an early scan helps establish gestational age more accurately.

Why Should You Undergo Early Viability Scan?

Pregnant mothers may undergo an early scan for various medical as well as personal reasons, including:

  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • History of miscarriage
  • Pelvic pain
  • Previous ectopic pregnancy
  • General reassurance
  • Confirming the pregnancy sac is in the uterus (not ectopic)
  • Checking foetal viability and heartbeat
  • Determining if it’s a single or multiple pregnancy

Modern medical advancements offer solutions for many complications if an early pregnancy scan detects an issue. We will assess the situation and advise the steps needed, which may include:

  • Monitoring: Some problems may require ongoing observation throughout the pregnancy.
  • Specialised treatments: If there is a severe issue, medical interventions may be advised to minimise risks and achieve the best outcome.

What to Expect

The procedure is performed by a qualified sonographer with scanning experience and includes a 20-minute diagnostic appointment. This timeframe encompasses arrival, the ultrasound examination, reviewing images, and an opportunity to discuss any concerns with the sonographer. Patients receive printed pictures and a diagnostic report as part of the service.

It’s important to note that early pregnancy scans are generally safe. Also, because of the embryo’s small size at this point, the scan can be performed transvaginally to provide better clarity.

How to Prepare for Your Pregnancy Scan

You must have a full bladder prior to the scan for optimal imaging. So, you should drink 1 litre or 2 pints of water about one hour before your appointment. Also, put on a two-piece outfit, such as a top with trousers or a skirt, for easy access to your abdomen.

You’re welcome to bring guests to this appointment; however, since it’s an early-stage scan, we advise against bringing children. It is also important to confirm a positive pregnancy test before scheduling.
